Mensagem da campanha/Message of the campaign

“Dear Tibet friend,

On 17th May 1995 Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, a six-year-old Tibetan boy who was recognised by the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama of Tibet, was kidnapped by the Chinese government together with his family. He has been missing for more than 10 years.

Despite repeated requests from the international community, independent observers have not been given access to the Panchen Lama and his family.

The International Campaign for Tibet has launched an international signature campaign for the release of the Panchen Lama.

On 19th and 20th September, China must report to the UN committee for the Rights of the Child for the first time in 9 years. This is a unique opportunity to raise the case of the Panchen Lama. Through an e-mail action ICT would like you to urge the Chairman of the Committee, Professor Jacob Egbert Doek, to ensure that the Committee obtains access to the boy in order to ascertain his current situation.

At present already 40.000 people have signed the petition, the goal is to collect 100.000 signatures before the Committee starts it’s meeting on 19th September. Your support is crucial!

Support this campaign for the release of the Panchen Lama by taking the following actions:

1 - Send a message to the UN Committee for the Rights of the Child.

CARTA ON-LINE / LETTER ON-LINE

Dear Prof. Doek,

Chairperson, UN Committee on the Rights of the Child

Despite numerous appeals from the international community, including the UN High Commissioner for Human Rights, Chinese authorities have refused to allow independent verification of the well-being of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the 11th Panchen Lama.

Instead, China sends mixed signals regarding his whereabouts, promotes the visibility of the child they installed in his place, and persecutes Tibetans who would show him devotion.

I urge the Committee on the Rights of the Child to make clear to China that its actions are wholly unacceptable in the matter of religious authority and in conflict with the legal and moral framework of the United Nations, including the Convention on the Rights of the Child to which it is a State Party.

This year marks the tenth anniversary of the young Panchen Lama's disappearance. I respectfully submit that it is your responsibility to ensure that China does not escape accountability for the grave injustices perpetrated against him, as was the case when China last reported to the Committee in May 1996.

When China appears before the Committee this year, I urge you to secure an agreement that you be allowed to meet with the 11th Panchen Lama and his parents in the immediate future to establish his current situation.

Yours sincerely,
