Quem é o menino Panchen Lama?

É a segunda mais importante autoridade espiritual logo a seguir a Sua Santidade o Dalai Lama, por isso o Governo Chinês o raptou. O seu nome é Gedhun Choekyi Nyima.

E o que lhe aconteceu?

A 17 de maio de 1995, então com 6 anos de idade, o menino foi raptado pelo Governo Chinês após ter sido reconhecido por Dalai Lama como sendo uma importante figura no budismo tibetano; figura essa chamada de o "Panchen Lama". Depois dessa data ninguém voltou a ver a criança. O Governo chinês sempre negou as visitas ao menino de organizações internacionais, nomeadamente, Cruz Vermelha Internacional e Amnistia Internacional. Recentemente, o Governo Chinês começou a apresentar no Tibete um outro menino dizendo que é aquele o Panchen Lama, o que não é verdade. Onde está então Gedhun Choekyi Nyima? Esta é uma pergunta que devemos fazer.

Hoje, passados 10 anos sobre o rapto, o Comité da ONU irá novamente, em Setembro, questionar o Governo Chinês sobre o paradeiro do menino. Esta é, pois, uma extraordinária oportunidade para se tentar salvar esta criança, hoje já adolescente. Por várias vezes se provou que vidas foram salvas no Tibete e na China devido a pressão internacional.

Nesse contexto, a International Campaign for Tibet (ICT) lançou uma campanha na internet para que todos possam enviar uma carta a ONU solicitando que se questione o Governo Chinês sobre o paradeiro da criança. This year Tibet Support Groups worldwide have intensified their campaign for the Gedhun Choekyi Nyima, the young boy kidnapped by Chinese authorities on May 17, 1995 just days after he was recognized by the Dalai Lama as the 11th Panchen Lama. A primary focus of these campaigns has been China’s appearance before the UN Committee for the Rights of the Child (CRC) on 19-20 September 2005 in Geneva, Switzerland. This Committee focuses on all aspects of children’s rights in the reporting country, including issues such as the legal status of minors.

This will be the first time China appears before the CRC since 1996, the year following the detention of Gedhun Choekyi Nyima when China admitted for the first time that it had taken the child. Despite repeated appeals to gain access to him, no international agency or human rights organization has been granted contact with the young Panchen Lama or his family. To date, their well-being and whereabouts remain unconfirmed. China's appearance before the CRC is a major window of opportunity to advance the case of the missing Panchen Lama.

In the lead up to this important meeting, Tibet support groups around the world are collectively telling the Chinese government and the UN CRC that this decade-long tragedy must come to an end! Join in this global action for the young Panchen Lama! Your voice is needed so please act now!

Recent Actions

• ICT and Tibet Justice Centre delivered written report to the UN CRC and attend the CRC’s pre-sessional working group to deliver an oral statement in June 2005.
• Panchen Lama remained in focus during Ngawang Sangdrol’s trip in Europe and meetings with governments there from May - July 2005.
• On May 17th 2005, ITSN held a "Global Vigil for Tibet's Panchen Lama," encompassing 66 venues in 21 countries.
• Kofi Annan Urgent Appeal letter drafted by ICT in association with the Congressional Human Rights Caucus, was circulated to and signed by 43 members of the US Congress
• Kofi Annan Urgent Appeal letter signed by 46 Italian MPs and a Polish parliamentary group. Currently being prepared in 10 other European parliaments.
• ICT and Tibetan Youth Association Europe co-organizing Panchen Lama Rally in Geneva during China’s report to the CRC on 19th September.
